What is IVF?
IVF (in vitro fertilisation) is a fertility treatment in which eggs are collected from the woman's ovaries and fertilised with sperm in a laboratory. The embryos that develop are watched closely in the lab for a few days, and one embryo is then gently placed in the uterus. If it implants, pregnancy begins the same way as a natural pregnancy.
IVF is not the first step for every couple. Many couples conceive with simpler treatment such as medicines to help ovulation or IUI. Our doctors first find the reason behind the delay and then recommend the simplest treatment that has a real chance of working for you.
Who may need IVF?
A fertility specialist may suggest IVF when:
- The fallopian tubes are blocked or damaged
- The egg reserve is low (low AMH) or the woman's age is reducing the chances of natural conception
- The sperm count or movement is low (male factor infertility), where ICSI is often used along with IVF
- There is endometriosis, PCOS that has not responded to simpler treatment, or fibroids affecting fertility
- IUI or ovulation treatment has not worked after a few cycles
- The cause of infertility is unexplained even after tests
- A couple wants genetic testing of embryos because of a known genetic condition in the family
The IVF process, step by step
1. Consultation and tests
Both partners are evaluated. For the woman this usually includes hormone tests such as AMH, an ultrasound to count the follicles in the ovaries and a check of the uterus. For the man, a semen analysis is done, and a sperm DNA fragmentation test if needed. Based on these results the doctor plans your treatment.
2. Ovarian stimulation
Hormone injections are given for around 8 to 12 days to help the ovaries produce more than one mature egg. Growth of the follicles is tracked with ultrasound scans and blood tests, and doses are adjusted to your body's response.
3. Egg collection
When the eggs are ready, they are collected with a fine needle under ultrasound guidance. This is a short day-care procedure done under anaesthesia, and most women go home the same day.
4. Fertilisation (IVF or ICSI)
In conventional IVF, eggs and sperm are placed together so fertilisation happens naturally. In ICSI (intracytoplasmic sperm injection), the embryologist injects a single selected sperm into each egg. ICSI is commonly used when sperm count or quality is low.
5. Embryo culture
The fertilised eggs grow into embryos in the IVF lab under controlled conditions. Our embryologists monitor their development and select the best embryo for transfer. Where helpful, laser-assisted hatching may be used to help the embryo implant.
6. Embryo transfer
The selected embryo is placed into the uterus through a thin, soft tube. The procedure is usually painless and does not need anaesthesia. Good-quality extra embryos can be frozen for later use.
7. Pregnancy test
A blood test (beta hCG) is done about two weeks after the transfer to confirm whether pregnancy has begun.

How to prepare for IVF
Bring all your previous reports and treatment records to the first visit. Eating a balanced diet, staying active, keeping a healthy weight, and avoiding smoking and alcohol support both egg and sperm health. Tell your doctor about any medicines you take. Above all, ask every question you have, because understanding each step makes the journey much less stressful.
