Low AMH: Can I Still Become a Mother?
A low AMH report can feel frightening. Here is what it really means, what it does not mean, and the treatment options available in Indore.
What is AMH?
AMH (anti-Müllerian hormone) is a hormone made by the small follicles in the ovaries. Its level in the blood gives doctors an idea of the ovarian reserve, which means roughly how many eggs are left in the ovaries. AMH naturally falls with age, because every woman is born with a fixed number of eggs that reduces over the years.
AMH tells us about the number of eggs, not their quality. Egg quality depends mostly on age. This is why a young woman with low AMH can still have good-quality eggs.
Does low AMH mean I cannot become a mother?
No. Low AMH does not mean you cannot get pregnant. Many women with low AMH conceive, some naturally and some with treatment. What low AMH does mean is that time matters more, and that you may respond with fewer eggs if you need IVF. It is a signal to get a proper evaluation and plan early, not a reason to lose hope.
What causes low AMH?
- Increasing age, which is the most common reason
- Previous surgery on the ovaries, for example for cysts or endometriosis
- Endometriosis
- Chemotherapy or radiation treatment
- Genetic factors and a family history of early menopause
- Smoking
In some women no clear cause is found.
How is low ovarian reserve diagnosed?
A single AMH report is not read alone. Your doctor will look at it together with your age, an ultrasound to count the antral follicles (AFC), other hormone tests such as FSH, your periods and your overall fertility history. Your partner's semen analysis is also important, because both partners are evaluated together.
Treatment options with low AMH
Treatment depends on your age, your other test results and how long you have been trying. Options include:
Trying naturally with timed guidance
If you are young and other reports are normal, your doctor may advise trying for a short time with ovulation tracking.
Ovulation induction and IUI
Medicines can help the ovaries release eggs, sometimes combined with IUI (placing washed sperm directly in the uterus).
IVF with an individualised plan
In IVF, the stimulation plan is adjusted to your ovarian reserve. Even if fewer eggs are collected, one healthy embryo is what is needed for a pregnancy. Sometimes more than one cycle is planned to collect and freeze embryos.
Egg freezing
Women with low AMH who are not ready to conceive yet can consider freezing their eggs at a younger age, when egg quality is better.
Donor eggs
When the woman's own eggs are very few or IVF has not worked, donor eggs are an option, as permitted under Indian law.
Can lifestyle changes increase AMH?
There is no proven way to significantly raise AMH. But a healthy weight, balanced diet, regular exercise, good sleep and no smoking support overall egg health and improve your general fitness for pregnancy. Be careful of supplements or "treatments" that promise to increase AMH quickly; discuss anything you plan to take with your doctor.
When should you see a fertility specialist?
See a specialist if your AMH report is low, if you are under 35 and have been trying for a year, if you are over 35 and have been trying for six months, or if you have irregular periods, endometriosis or a history of ovarian surgery. Early evaluation gives you more options.
